Mario Bellatin


Mario Bellatin was born in Mexico City in 1960 and raised in Peru. He spent two years studying theology at the seminary Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo and graduated from the University of Lima. In 1987, he moved to Cuba, where he studied screenwriting before returning to Mexico in 1995. He is the author of more than three dozen experimental works of fiction. A practising Sufi, Bellatin has been awarded the Premio Nacional Mazatlán de Literatura, the Premio Xavier Villaurrutia, the Premio José María Arguedas, the Prix Antonin Artaud, the Barbara Gittings Literature Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship; he has also been a finalist for the Prix Médicis. He lives in Mexico City.
